To understand how to teach Junior Learning Letters and Sounds Phase 6 suffix progression required for Year 1 and
Phase 5.5 Alternative graphemes.
Year 1 Teachers and TAs
Teachers or TAs in LKS2 supporting intervention groups in KS2
In Year 1 children are introduced to some Phase 6 prefix (un) and suffix (s, es, ing, er, ed, est) to meet end of Year 1 requirements.
In Phase 5.5 children learn new graphemes (different ways of spelling each sound) and alternative pronunciations for these: for example, learning that the phoneme ‘ai’ makes a different grapheme such as ‘a’ and ‘ey’ as well as the Phase 5 graphemes ‘ay’ an ‘a-e’
They should become quicker at blending, and start to do it silently.
They learn about split digraphs such as the a-e in ‘name.’
They’ll start to choose the right graphemes when spelling, and will learn more tricky words.
