In Phase 6 children learn to become fluent readers and accurate spellers.

Children should now be spelling most words accurately (this is known as 'encoding'), although this usually falls behind reading. They will also learn, among other things:

• Prefix - un, dis, mis
• Suffix – s, es, ies, ing, ed, er, est, y, ly, ness, ment, ful, less, en
• The past tense
• homophones
• contractions
• How to use a dictionary
